Global Rail Systems Model TS-4500 Switch
Operating Procedures
Global Rail Systems TS 4500 power switch machine is an integrated system combining the switch machine, charging system, occupancy detection system, the switch position indication system and the components to allow the safest most reliable method of local or remote switch control available. All critical components in the system are designed and manufactured by Global Rail Systems.
Switch Machine
Global Rail Systems TS 4500 power switch machine is the latest in technology design allowing a cost effective solution to increase safety and reliability in yard and mainline switch control applications. The unique patent pending design incorporates the best practices of applied engineering for force generation and switch point holding force. The reduction of linkages and sealed bearings ensures increased reliability and minimizes maintenance requirements lowering the overall cost of ownership. The direct drive design maximizes the available power for throwing any size switch point. The spring holding force is easily adjusted and will not cause track structure failure due to excessive impact during throwing or while in the holding position. The field serviceable spring assembly allows maximum availability and reliability.
The TS 4500 switch machine is available in various methods of operation;
- Push button operation is the basic form of operation allowing the operator to control the position of the switch by selecting either the normal or reverse push button on a lockable box on the electronics box mounted to the mast at the switch.
- DTMF, Dual Tone Multi Frequency, control of the system allows the operator to remotely control the position of the switch through the keypad on a hand held or locomotive based radio. The code is determined by the railroad. This system will confirm switch position by either audible announcements, LED displays or both.
- Data Radio control will allow the control of the switch machine from a remote location from an outdoor local push button control panel, an outdoor touch screen PC local control panel or a yardmasters computer screen. This method allows the use of specific software to maximize efficiencies in operations and safety.

Point Detection System
In a FAS-PAS™ system, redundancy of critical inputs provides for vital outputs. In operations where switch position detection is critical, the TS 4500 switch machine ensures the switch position is known with proximity sensors placed inside the machine away from the elements. The sensors monitor the position of the cylinder attached directly to the throw rod so any movement of the rod is detected. The system detects the position and will provide the appropriate warning. If the switch is run through, the event log will detect the action and log it but the system is resettable with a push button control.
Switch Machine Charging
The switch machine is designed as a 12 volt DC system. There are two methods available to recharge the battery, solar power, with tilt over mast for ease of maintenance, and AC trickle charger. Both come with a 100 amp/hr battery to ensure continued operability if power is interrupted.
Switch Zone Detection Sub-System System (OS)
Safety is always the first priority in the implementation of our design. Where required, Global Rail Systems/SI utilizes two audio frequency overlay track circuits for the complete switch. This requires just two insulated joints to be installed on the turnout side of the control point just behind the switch points. The track circuits are four wire, closed loop track circuits designed according to AREMA recommended practices. Depending on the system requirements, Global Rail Systems can provide a full OS system to prevent the switch from being thrown while the OS is occupied and will also eliminate side swipes. A single track circuit, which does not require the use of insulated joints, can also be utilized to protect the switch from being thrown in the face of a car or while occupied.
Switch Control System
The Global Rail Systems TS 4500 switch machine can be purchased as a stand alone switch stand or with the Global Logic Controller (GLC) which allows the switch machine to be integrated into advanced yard control systems. The integrated logic controller logs all events, up to 15,000, for event reconstruction.
