NEWS! --- "Rail tankers with deadly chlorine and ammonia would have to slow down (to 30 mph) unless they were shipped in more impact-resistant tanks under a new rule proposed today by the Federal Railroad Administration. The 30 mph speed limit would apply in so-called 'dark territory,' where there are no sensors and no communication network to relay the condition of tracks and signals to approaching train crews. About half of the nation's freight lines lack such modern safety systems. Trains could go as fast as 50 mph if they modernized train control or they shipped the deadly chemicals in a new generation of tank cars able to withstand five times the impact that current tanker models do. The rail agency estimates it will cost $350 million - about $40,000 per tank car - and take eight years for railroads to make the conversion." --- Erik N.
