Broken Rail Detection

Global Rail Systems Model BRD-2 System is comprised of the DC track circuits, electronics housings, solar panels for charging, if AC is not requested, radio for announcement of detection, batteries, tilt-over masts and track wire. A data radio can also be supplied for indications to an office system if desired.

The BRD-2 system is a simple cost effective method for providing broken rail detection in areas where it has previously been cost prohibitive to accomplish.

The DC Coded track circuit is a small lightweight din rail mounted component that allows for circuits of up to 50,000 ft in most ballast conditions. The VHF/UHF radio is programmed to the existing radio frequency and will broadcast a pre-recorded message upon detection of a broken rail or circuit.

broken rail schematic

  • Track circuit uses coded DC pulses
  • Maximum track length – up to 50,000’ at 3-ohm/1000’ ballast
  • Shunt detection – 0.06 ohm
  • Does not affect any audio overlay or grade crossing equipment
  • Logic can be performed within the receiver unit
  • Output indication aspect controlled by relay contacts of output
  • Logic performed vitally by dual redundant processing
  • Low power consumption allows solar applications
