Global Rail Systems Shove Protection system is designed to allow the indication of zone occupancy by audible and/or visual methods depending on the application.
Current Issue
In switching operations of both railroad and industrial facilities, there is an identified problem regarding the traincrews knowledge of the specific location of the consist in relation to their position on the track they are shoving into and how much room is available before they reach the end of the track. A secondary problem exists when personnel are at the point of the shove and there is either miscommunication regarding distance available or lost communication between crew members. In most operations this results in the consist running into a bumper post, sand pile or some other object to stop or it runs off the end of the track. Any of these scenarios is unsafe and can cause extensive damage to the equipment, lading and/or personnel and disrupt operations leading to increased costs.
Resolution
A resolution to this problem is to positively identify the position of the consist when it gets to a specific point of the track that should either not be encroached upon or where additional care is needed in the movement. The system must also allow flexibility to allow maximum use of the available track for utilization and efficiency purposes.
The Shove and Occupancy Detection System is a stand alone, solar charged configuration that will be positioned to monitor specific sections of track with individual identifications that are audibly recognizable by the crews utilizing current operating identifications or indicated by LED position indicators. The occupancy locations can be designated and set up as required to provide the operators the necessary information to achieve a safe operation. The purpose of this system is to provide the train operators with a position occupancy indication through an audible announcement and/or an LED indicator when a specific section of track has been occupied. The system will either announce a pre-recorded message warning of the occupation over an existing UHF/VHF radio network utilized for train crew communication or the LED will light up when triggered by occupancy.
